Right up front, I’ll point out the three most obvious things about GT5 Prologue.
1. It looks gorgeous
2. The AI is abominable.
3. There is still no car damage.

To use a lovely english expression : it’s all mouth and no trousers. Look past the HD graphics and hype and you’ll find Gran Turismo 1 lurking here.

The Gran Turismo games are known for their accurate car handling and fantastic graphics, and GT5 Prologue is no exception. The problem is that it is all absolutely ruined by the other driver AI. Previous Gran Turismo titles have never exactly shone when it comes to the AI, but in GT5 it’s simply non-existent. It’s not that the AI is dumb, it’s just not there. The other cars all drive on rails, irrespective of where you are. For example, on the High Speed Ring circuit - there’s a challenge to get from the back of the pack to the front in a single lap. In the car they give you, it is 100% impossible to come any higher than 3rd, and that’s a stretch. The driving-on-rails is so accurate and predictable that you can actually predict exactly where every car will be at any given point. You’ll come up behind the Ford Focus at the end of the second turn, and don’t even think about passing him on the outside because he will always jink to the left for no reason as he goes across the bridge. If you’re in the way, then tough. The game will just force you off the track. At the next corner, the Mazda 6 will always follow the identical line inside the corner, again irrespective of whether you’re there.
The same is true in the other types of race. Within minutes of playing this game, you will find yourself making a tidy corner only to have a much faster car come right up behind you and ram you off the track because you’re in the way of it’s pre-programmed line. To see how truly awful it is, start a race at the back and watch the 15 cars in front of you. They’ll all cut the same corner in the same way, every lap, all with the identical puff of dirt as they do it.
It is simply abominable.

The problem is that this issue was solved long ago by the likes of - well - just about every other racing franchise out there. It’s compounded by the fact that there is still no car damage or dirt in GT5. You can stuff any car into a concrete armco at 175mph and it will simply bounce off without so much as a scratch. To think that Polyphony could put out a game with no car damage and ruinous AI on a next-gen console in 2008 just boggles the mind given how accomplished the competition is (think: Project Gotham Racing).

So what about the eye-candy aspect? Well - it runs at 1080p (full HD) and it looks absolutely spectacular. The textures are crisp and don’t blur out at highly obtuse angles like they would on an X-Box. The car models are beautiful as are the various effects like the real-time reflections and the colour-flip paint jobs. There is some aliasing on high-contrast areas but detail popup is minimal. There are very noticable level-of-detail swaps on some of the cars where they swap from a low detail to a high detail version. It’s most noticable on the Daytona circuit where you’ll occasionally see the shading on the back of a car pop noticably as the model swaps to it’s higher resolution version. In fact the eye-candy aspect is only marred slightly be the fact that the game clearly doesn’t run at 60 frames per second. Well - it does on sparsely populated tracks but in the thick of the action on some circuits, you’ll see noticable slowdown which you just shouldn’t have on a console as powerful as a PS3.

What other things to know about? Well the online aspect of the game has a lot of promise but it’s buggy at best. If your PS3 isn’t set up pefectly on a broadband network (NAT type 1) it just won’t connect to the servers. If you’re lucky enough to have a good setup, then even when it does connect, the racing is a bit dodgy. It’s obvious that the sample rate for your system communicating with all the others is fairly slow as you’ll often see your opponents cars jump across the circuit from one side to the other, or suddenly appear to brake or accelerate at light speed as the servers catch up.

When you come to use the game for the first time, be prepared for a long wait. It seems to copy the entire blu-ray disc on to the internal hard drive which takes a good 15 minutes, then as soon as you connect, it will download a huge update which will take 5 to 10 minutes to download and another 5 minutes to install. So out-of-the-box to first race is about 30 minutes. That seems a bit odd to me - I was entirely expecting the game to run off the disc like many of the other PS3 titles.

So GT5 Prologue : it’s great eye-candy, sure. But the two biggest, most long-standing problems with the GT franchise are still present. Awful AI and no car damage. The press previews and talk from Polyphony indicate that the full game will have car damage, but historically, they’ve never been known to change their underlying game engines between the ‘Prologue’ and the full versions of GT. They have always claimed that they’ve fixed the AI with each successive version of the game, but honestly - GT5 Prologue has taken a massive step backwards. They say it’s better than ever but it’s actually worse than ever. So when they say there will be car damage in the full game, I say ‘cry wolf’ I’m afraid.

It’s an ominous omen for GT5 later this year. Sure it’ll have more cars and more tracks. But chances are it will have the same problems the GT franchise has always had, and that’s simply not good enough. Couple that with the questionable frame rate and online problems and that could be disastrous.

I dearly love the GT franchise - I’ve had every oneblank of them and I’ve been hoping and praying that they would one day fix the AI problems and the lack of car damage. If they’ve not done it on the PS3, then it’s just never going to happen, and that is a sad indictment of Polyphony’s marketing strategy. I’ve played this game a lot, desperately wanting to like it but I always put the controller down and am left with an empty feeling. It’s just not exciting.

If you are going into Sims 3 thinking of it as an improved Sims 2 you will be disappointed.

The Sims 3 is a “Sims Type Game”. It’s like the previous Sim games but not quite. Sims 2 was about creating your own storyline. Sims 3 is about rolling with the punches. The game will change things in the neighborhood at random. People will die, move out, have children…the neighborhood is constantly changing. Like someone else said, the game is rather like an RPG. If you liked having complete control like in Sims 2 then you may not like this game.

Also, if you did not know. With Story Progression mode on Sims will leave town. Meaning they will disappear. Not only townies, your custom made Sims can be randomly deleted. It is not a glitch. It is an actual feature of the game. It’s difficult to understand why EA thought having Sims randomly deleted was a good idea, but it’s there.

There is an option to turn off Story Progression which is supposed to stop life changing events. Unfortunately this button does not work. Story Progression being such an important part of Sims 3, you have to wonder how this got by EA quality control. To me this is unexcusable. Fans have every right to be angry about this. Even before the game released this was a widely known problem. Everybody expects bugs, but for an important feature of the game to outright not work is ridiculous.

Next, the controls. Sims 3 controls: Clumsy. In Sims 2 the controls are simple, friendly, and easy to use. Sims 3 controls are strangely clunky and makes you jump through alot of hoops for something as simple as switching families. Get ready to learn the new and sometimes confusing interface.

Onto the Sims looks. Even after watching all of the promotional videos I did not realize the Sims 3 Sims were quite so chubby. There are ways to slim down the face in CAS but once you actually start playing them they look chubby again. After many hours of playing I have actually grown accustomed to their looks so it doesn’t bother me as much now. If looks are very important to you this maybe a dealbreaker.

The Camera. Camera movement is not as smooth as in TS2. It’s very touchy and jumpy. After getting used to the controls I’m getting better at using it but at the same time it lacks the smoothness of Sims 2. This is not because of my computer. My computer way exceeds the minimum requirements for Sims 3. The game itself is just plain laggy. Some advice for those frustrated with the right click screen drag, go into options and enable edge scrolling this will alleviate some of your frustration.

Onto the Pros!
The seamless neighborhood is gorgeous. This is one thing EA got right. I almost never left home in TS2. In TS3 going into town is one of my favorite things about the game. The scenery is beautiful. Go to the beach and lookout onto the water, it’s moving, glimmering, and looks so alive.
I built my Sim home right next to a waterfall. Beautiful!

Traits system. I really enjoy the traits system. You can now make truly unique personalities. The little personality quirks of my Sims make me smile. Like if you have a neurotic Sim, they will want to check the sink constantly to make sure it’s not dirty. A loner Sim will become upset at being around other Sims. An insane Sim will talk to himself.

Color Options. I love being able to give my Sims crazy colored hair and eyes. You can also recolor almost anything.

Improved AI. It’s not obvious, but I do think the Sims are more intelligent in Sims 3. They are better at doing things by themselves. Frustratingly they still do the footstomp when their route is blocked.

Overall it’s an entertaining game similar to The Sims games. But I am disappointed by the number of technical issues the game has. My advice to Sim fans is DO NOT uninstall Sims 2. I’m very glad I did not uninstall TS2. There are things TS2 still does better. It’s much simpler and easier to play. I will be going back and forth between TS2 and TS3, enjoying the similarities and the differences.

EDIT: Hi I just wanted stress one thing. What EA did with The Sims 3 was take away creative control from the player. This is what made so many fans angry. I’m sure the anger will simmer down over time but the overall disappointment and missed potential will remain. The Sims 2 was about playing GOD. It is an integral part of what made The Sims so successful and loved. For EA to have taken that away from the player is a blow to a large group of The Sims fanbase. Now, it’s still possible they will add more controls in future expansion packs so I’m not giving up on this game yet. It has a lot of potential and I would like EA to use it to it’s fullest.

Platform: PLAYSTATION 3 | Edition: Standard

* Tackle a horror-filled mission as Chris Redfield from the original ###LT!!!i###GT!!!Resident Evil###LT!!!/i###GT!!! or Sheva Alomar, a West African agent of the BSAA
* Take advantage of the new, two-player online co-op mode to double your team’s effectiveness in the face of a new breed of evil
* Use new weapons to defend yourself when faced with hordes of faster, smarter enemies
* Explore the remote desert setting of Kijuju with highly-developed, detailed game environments
* Experience groundbreaking graphics and effects delivered by an advanced version of Capcom’s proprietary MT Framework engine

Ok, let me get this out of the way, I have played both the 360 and PS3 version through the first couple of chapters. I don’t see a difference, both versions look fantastic!! This is an absolutely beautiful game on either system, I purchased the PS 3 version because I am still, and always be a fan of the Dualshock controller, I guess you could call me a dualshock fanboy.
Ok some reviewers hammered home the comparisons to RE 4, and that’s fair, apparently Capcom didn’t want to stray from what worked for them and RE 4 was a runaway hit. I like that the game “feels” familiar but different at the same time. I played the demo a lot to get a handle on the controls, because we can all agree that they take a bit of adjustment from other 3rd person games. I know for the purity of the game Capcom decided to leave the run and gun aspect out of it, but I can’t tell you how many times I wish I could pull a Gears of War tactic out of my a$$ during some of the more intense encounters, but after adjusting to the RE frame of mind I adapted quickly.
The story has enough cheese in it to keep me happy, I am perfectly happy with the story, my level of escapism with the game was just right, I don’t need a life altering story to make me love a game.
I can’t recommend this game enough, it is perfect for me in many ways. In my opinion it deserves my 5 Star rating.

PSN Id- Kmann_Rocks
add me for some co-op! I am trying to get more friends on PSN!

*EDIT*
I am adding that the inventory/cash system is ridiculous lol. You can literally farm levels for cash, ammo, weapons and treasures over and over and over…
I still love the game though, online co-op is amazing.

Put the pedal to the metal and slam into oncoming traffic! In this game your objective is to gain as much speed as possible and slam in to the oncoming traffic with full force! it may sound insane to crash a perfectly good car, but that is your objective. The more damage you do… the more you score. Pick up power ups on your way before you slam into traffic, to cause maximum damage. You can also slam through buildings with glass windows! so strap on your seat belt and say your prayers… it’s going to be a one hell of ride!
